A career in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) can be challenging to navigate, and yet deeply rewarding.
There are many different paths to take, and this resource aims to help you understand how to start your own career in one of the many fields, as well as providing examples of possible routes and requirements for each role. If you are a current STEM professional, it also provides guidance on how to progress your career.
While this resource focuses on roles in and around academic research, STEM as a whole spans far beyond this to include industry and other sectors. There are many opportunities to transition between sectors, and a career need not be limited by any particular sector.
There are many routes into STEM careers, however the routes into research careers and the majority of the roles discussed in this resource, follow the more linear path of undergraduate higher education, postgraduate taught study, and doctoral research.
There is a growing effort to make STEM careers more inclusive and open so that more people from under-represented groups can successfully enter and progress, recognising that this has not historically been the case, and that a great deal of talent has been lost a result. As a part of this, there is an increasing number of resources and sources of support to help those in under-represented groups pursue and maintain STEM research careers.
