Vitae, a programme to support the career and professional development of researchers in higher education, has developed a competency framework for researchers.
Since 2009, this has been widely adopted in the UK and is becoming more common in other countries. Many of the development and training opportunities for researchers and doctoral/PhD students have been created with this framework in mind.
The framework also includes a series of ‘lenses’ that show which of these skills and competencies are likely to be more important in certain contexts and roles within research, such as leadership or public engagement.
