Emma always loved the practical aspect of working in a scientific role – the sampling, setting up experiments, and trying new techniques. She considered going into a more academic career, but decided she would rather be working in a role that allowed her to focus on the elements that she really enjoyed and would help others. She took on her first technical role at the university in 2009.

"My job as it stands 13 years later is very varied on a daily basis. I could be helping students set up and run experiments, advising companies on seaweed growing techniques, driving a boat, undertaking animal husbandry, or maintaining a busy marine lab environment. I’ve been able to specialise and grow within this role, with a period being a research technician specialising in seaweed growth, and doing a great deal of outreach work to engage the general public with the work that we carry out."
